China Unicom Cuts Cross-border Roaming Fees for 3G Expansion
Wednesday November 25, 2009 06:30:00 EST
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU) carried out another round of markdown over its international roaming fees lately and applies the same charging system to both its 2G and 3G businesses, affirmed the Chinese mobile operator.
China Unicom has been offering WCDMA voice and short message services to its customers in more than 100 countries in cooperation with over 260 mobile operators by far, with theoretical downloading and uploading speeds of 14.4Mbps and 5.76Mbps, respectively. In countries like Japan, South Korea, the US, and Canada, the company's 3G users can enjoy roaming services without hiring other cellphones.
Analysts believed that China Unicom's latest markdown would make its roaming services affordable to more WCDMA users, of whom many hung back formerly in the face of high prices. Of the 26 countries and territories haunted by Chinese, 23 sees China Unicom's China-destined calling services cheaper than those of China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL and SEHK: 0941).
